Artist StatementFrom my very first experience of water and color running freely on paper, I was captivated and exhilarated! And so began the quest of coaxing the medium into expressing my vision and my mood. I can imagine nothing more challenging and fulfilling than continuing to explore the infinite possibilities watercolor offers me. I am most inspired by its brilliant rich pure color and it’s transparent quality that can be enhanced with glazing and layering techniques, building value and luminosity into my paintings.
While I love the intellectual aspects of watercolor; --the constant problem solving and specific evaluations,--it’s the spontaneity the medium demands that captivates me most; the constant aspect of being thrown off guard, surprised and delighted, or even terrified by the often unharnessed chaos of water and paint running with abandon! What could be more thrilling! (or disturbing). Teaching others has been a huge aspect of my evolvement as an artist -- I think I am a born teacher; I love teaching and inspiring students to challenge themselves to reach into their font of creativity. I find myself enriched by their process of awakening to aspects of themselves of which they may have been unaware. They in turn challenge me to reach further and explore new ways to inspire and convey techniques and composition and design principles. My work has evolved dramatically as a result of this fulfilling exploration. More and more as I expand as a watercolorist, I find myself intrigued with the laying in of paint and water and then responding to the mysterious play of the two, rather than sticking to my original plan. My quest is to keep it fresh; colors clean, vibrant and transparent. But most of all, I want to get lost in the process; carried away into that timeless ‘zone’ of creativity; ideas and inspiration exploding like starbursts. The painting that evolves and finds itself hanging on the wall is the icing on the cake! |
